Happy Death Day 2U
tl;dr ok, if you are into trashy comedy slasher/horror movies but don't expect anything more
ok ok I'll answer the important questions first! What in the heavens got me into watching some trash slasher. And the answer is rather similar to what got me into watching the first Happy Death Day. You are hanging out with friends and come up with a spontaneous idea like visiting the local movie theatre. Happy Death Day got lucky twice in a row because both spontaneous visits ended up with me watching something that's not really my taste of movie and it might show in this review but I'll try.
My friend who did not watch the first one asked me what happend before and if any of that would be important. Problem was I did not remember anything - no names of the characters no major plot nor the ending. I just knew some girl was trapped in some time loop and get's murdered several times in sometimes very gruesome ways. Interessting was that Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity, Scouts vs. Zombies) jumped into Happy Death Day 2(U) with the expectation that everyone knew what was going on. It was kinda awkward to see how the movie builds up suspense in the first 20 minutes trying too hard and with so much detail to show the audience it is indeed the same day from the first movie but not a single soul was able to connect any of these scenes. I loved the brave maneuver though expecting people to know what was going on during a "one-time-watch" movie from 2017 (fuck felt like I watched that one back in 2010).
The movie works with the same sense of humor as the first one part trashy part black part slapstick sometimes it works sometimes it absolutely does not (*cringe*). No problem about that someone might actually like that so there is no need in changing that but sometimes you might want to take a look at a different plot. I mean nothing really changed from the first movie except that the time looping thing has an actual (?) scientific explanation (or w/e give them a break... at least they tried).
Where they didn't try very hard were the slasher/horror scenes which are by the way the only scenes why I would ever go and watch that kind of genre. Somehow I had that weird feeling that they tried to focus on finishing the story instead of giving the audience diverting slashing episodes. The deaths were not as frightening as in the first Happy Death Day and were also not that numerous. I wished for a more Scouts vs. Zombies approach where Christopher Landon was able to make comedy horror enjoyable even for viewers like me.
