Get Out
tl;dr good thriller lacking a few horror scenes/shockers, nice atmossphere throughout the entire movie and a decent storyline coming to an (maybe too) abrupt ending
making racism as a leading theme for a movie while also hiding the true intentions of the antagonists is partly risky but also pretty brilliant. The movie is able to build up suspense and creates with the subliminal racism a shiver for the audience (it is hard to describe but as a viewer i felt somewhat freaked out when the protagonist [Chris] was interacting with family members and friends). The audience expects something fishy and has to wait for a major plot twist to reveal the truth.
One thing i did not like about the movie is the connection from the protagonist Chris to his friend Rod who he often calls and talks about his concerns about the stay at the armitage manor. Not only does this ruin the pretty well created atmossphere (an atmossphere at the manor with no obvious threat - which is very hard to do for a lot of directors imo), Rod also tends to make pretty bad jokes trying to hard to give the movie any kind of comedy elements. Which (and this is the worst thing) the movie did not need in the first place...Instead I would have wished for more shockers, more interactions with the gardener or the maid of the armitages and a longer ending scene. Make the final escape look harder, a prolonged fight scene and keep up the suspense, the audience experienced when Chris first tried to "get out".
I'll admit that I am not the biggest fan of satirical/humorous situations in horror movies unless they are really well done and fit perfectly inside the scene, the atmossphere and even the entire movie. If you start with satirical elements and take some seriousness out the scene you either jump the train or let it go but do not get at me with some inbetween stuff (feels awkward and undecided imo). Movies like "You're Next" combine the element of shock/humor and horror in the right way and indentify with the loose attitude but also save the "unsure" atmossphere by having unexpected jumpscares, dark humor and scarier/more shocking killings.

"Get Out" was also the first film ever by Jordan Peele and as a fan of "key and peele" I was astonished first watching it. Having seen the trailer for "US" the new film coming up this year I am raising my expectations! Hopefully "US" will be able to overcome the few weaknesses of "Get Out" and have a great start in 2019.
